All new lifting devices are required to be thoroughly examined and tested. A certificate comprising details of the lift type, manufacturer, electrical test results, safety mechanisms, and clearances should be completed and one copy retained by the supplier and one by the building owner or manager.
Once lifting equipment is installed, building owners and managers are responsible for arranging regular inspections and maintenance.
The timing of maintenance or other inspections should be carefully planned as the lifting equipment will have to be taken out of action for the duration of the maintenance task or test. In situations where the lifting device is in frequent use, it may be preferable to undertake maintenance and inspections out-of-hours. In locations where use of the lifting device is more predictable, maintenance and inspections could be undertaken during normal working hours, but at a time when it is known that use of the lift is not required.
Lifting devices should be tested within six months of installation and at intervals of no more than six months thereafter. It may be necessary for some lifting devices, such as those in particularly heavy use, to be inspected at more frequent intervals.
