Stairlift manufacturer Minivator has once again confirmed its continued growth with sales increasing by 24% over 2007 YTD. Chief Executive Mike Lord commented “We have a history of attaining strong growth within the Group: the first six months of this year have seen a phenomenal increase in sales. Sales have been strong across all sectors which is always encouraging.

We knew 2008 would be a busy year but we had expected to see the majority of growth in the second half following the release of the Slide Track and other new products, we are delighted that the last six months have seen such growth. It is testament to the hard work of all our Associates that we have achieved so much in the first half of the year.”

It not just the sales figures that are to be applauded, last month Mike Lord was awarded Overall Entrepreneur of the Year by the Midlands based publication ‘Insider’. This award recognises not only historical achievement but also potential for future excellence. Mike was pleased to win the award attributing his success to the support of a strong team: “This award recognises the fantastic performance of the team at Minivator. We pride ourselves on being dynamic and forward looking and our focus is to provide great products and service for all our customers. I believe our continued success is a direct result of the dedication of our team to achieve great things; and it is always gratifying to have this achievement recognised by external bodies.”

All Posture/Safety belts fitted to seating, stairlifts, hoists and wheelchairs

It has come Minivator’s attention that the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has issued a Medical Device Alert regarding the positioning and use of seat belts on a number of assistive aids including stairlifts.

The risk highlighted is that a user may slip, or ‘submarine’ under a seat belt if it is not positioned correctly resulting in a potential injury or fatality. If the user is seated at or around 90° they should be using a belt fixed near to the corner of the seat/base with the belt at approximately 45° to seat base with a snug fit over the pelvis.

This is not the first time concerns about such safety issues have been raised. At Minivator our design team have considered this factor when designing our lifts and as such we are pleased to confirm that all of our stairlifts are designed to allow the correct seat belt positioning as recommend by MHRA. You may wish to satisfy yourself that other suppliers of stairlifts seat belts meet the recommended design.

To view the full alert visit: www.mhra.gov.uk and search the site (top right of webpage) for MDA/2008/037.

The alert was posted on the 5th June 2008.

Associates at Minivator China set off 8000 Fire Crackers to celebrate their successful ISO 9001 Assessment. Fire Crackers are a traditional part of celebration in China: tradition holds they scare off evil spirits and welcome the Gods of Wealth to your door. 8 is a lucky number so the firecrackers were arranged in eight rows for extra luck.
The team out in China has worked hard to set up processes and procedures that are in line with our UK requirements, it is testament to this hard work that they were awarded the standard on their first assessment.
Graham Kemp, Managing Director Minivator China, commented “We have built a dedicated and hardworking team here in Shanghai. At each stage of set up members of the UK team have come out to offer support as required to ensure that our working practices dove tail with what’s going on at head office.

Gaining ISO9001 at our first pass is fantastic and is something that we are very proud off.”

“People were sceptical when we announced that we were looking to the Far East for manufacture. In reality the effect on our UK business can only be seen as positive.” said Ian Burrows, Operations Director “Our sales have continued to increase, we have opened another manufacturing unit in the UK, our team of installation engineers has expanded and our apprenticeship programme continues to grow.”

Having a base in China will also help with the goal of offering great service when it comes to eSurvey. We now have an image processing facility which means that photogrammetry pictures can be processed overnight (GMT timings) thereby speeding up the drawing process for curved stairlifts.

CASE STUDY: MINIVATOR
Constant innovation to stay ahead of the chasing pack is at the forefront of thinking for a highly successful Black Country company which prides itself on being the world’s second largest stairlift manufacturer.

Minivator Group, based at Kingswinford, announced earlier this year that its sales
have continued to soar. The group’s 2007 turnover was 13 per cent above the previous year with an
operating profit 32 per cent up. Growth has been driven across all areas – in the UK through local authorities, dealers and direct to the consumer, as well as through a wide-ranging international
channel.

This ongoing success has been achieved even though the general economic climate has been getting tougher, and Minivator expects to maintain the trend. Throughout this continued success, Minivator has been very grateful for the services of BDO Stoy Hayward, as Minivator finance director Simon Hardman explains. “BDO is our audit and tax adviser, providing a very pragmatic and professional service for us in everything it does,” he says. “BDO’s team really understand the Minivator business and they are an excellent business partner to work with in that they challenge what we do and how we do it, as well as providing an excellent sounding board for our ideas.

” Looking at the wider picture, Mr Hardman says: “Our industry is, to a certain extent, less susceptible to recession because stairlifts are need driven and not a luxury product which someone could do without when the going gets hard,” he says.

“The UK government announced an increase in Disabled Facilities Grant of 25 per cent earlier this year and it is hoped that they will continue to provide this funding.

“However, as with any industry, there is strong competition and as a company we must ensure that we have market leading products which distinguish us from our competitors.

“We major on innovative design and source materials that are well priced so that the end user has a value-for-money product.
“Here at Minivator we also take customer service very seriously. For instance, each time a
product is installed a customer service representative makes contact to ensure that the
service provided was satisfactory.

” According to Mr Hardman, these “happy calls” show that 99 per cent of customers are happy or delighted with the products, service and Minivator overall and 98 per cent say they would recommend other users to the company. “These results clearly indicate that the products and service we provide are benefiting our clients – something in which we take great pride,” he says.

“They also show that our innovative approach pays dividends for all. Our R & D
team of 12 people forms a significant part of the business and last year we had to take on a new
building just for this department to effect the design and test work for new products.

“The emphasis on innovation and design means that we now have the ability for stairlifts
and their users to be monitored remotely from our office to ensure everything is operating
smoothly. Should there be a problem it can often be resolved, remotely. “For example, if a user has left their stairlift off charge we can just telephone them and advise them how to rectify this potential
problem.

“We can take this service one step further by enabling the user to press a panic button on the
stairlift, contacting Minivator or a designated contact, for assistance. It is the ultimate peace
of mind, not only for users, but also their carers.” Minivator’s group turnover has increased
from £24million in 2005 to a 2008 forecast of £37million, and yet the industry as a whole has
not shown such dramatic growth. This gain in market share is further evidence that the company’s positive approach to innovation and service is the correct course. “Five years ago, our stairlifts were the
products of a typical Black Country metalbashing company, but the Minivator Group is
very much a technology-led service business now,” says Mr Hardman. “We design out costs to provide a more affordable product for our customers. “Another example of this will be seen later
this year, when we introduce a new seating system which can be used across the entire
range. This will mean that there will be just two types of seat instead of several, meaning
reduced manufacturing costs and ultimately better value for the end user.” This high technology is very much led from the Black Country, where two-thirds of the group’s workforce is based. In addition to the Black Country HQ, there is a direct sales operation in Leeds, which deals directly with end users and a US sales and distribution subsidiary for products manufactured in Kingswinford.
“Everyone across the business is very much focussed on our targets,” says Mr Hardman.
“We are a successful company, growing fast, because we set high standards for ourselves. At
the same time, we thoroughly enjoy what we are doing – Minivator has a unique culture
which is at the heart of our success.
“As well as doing the basics really well – such as the cash management – we also invest in the training and development of our staff and currently we are rolling out an NVQ programme for our supervisors. Additionally, we have taken on 24 apprentices this year, as part of our preparation for future growth.”
Indeed, the business — now five times bigger than when it was acquired by the present management seven years ago — has reaped the benefit of investment in product design, IT and staff. And the indications so far this year are that the upward trend will continue.

Naidex 2008 was a big hit for Minivator once again this year, giving us a platform to showcase our newest innovations and launching some revolutionary products. As well mobility dealers, the show also offered the most up to date information and technology to health care professionals and the public.
We were excited to be able to show a selection of some of the newest technology we are working on, including what proved to be the star of the show, the SlideTrack. Alongside SlideTrack we previewed two new bath lifts, the Nirvana and Atlantis and our talking stairlift, which demonstrated our latest eDiagnostic technology.
Exclusive to Minivator, SlideTrack was considered to be the showstopper of the event. This significant development in technology founded by our specialist research and development team completely removes the need for a hinge on straight stairlifts. The SlideTrack offers a safe, fully automatic and neat solution. The track actually slides automatically up the stairs whilst the lift is moving. Shown on the New Simplicity 950+, the SlideTrack attracted admirers from all over the industry.
We hope to release SlideTrack for sale in August and judging by the reaction of visitors to our stand it promises to be a huge success.
The talking stairlift also had its share of admirers too. This is the first time that we have publicly demonstrated the technology that will allow us to open up communication channels with stairlift users. Effectively the stairlift acts as a mobile phone, at the push of a button the user can call a pre-designated number in the case of an emergency - there is a microphone in the armrest and speaker in the back of the seat.

This technology also allows for remote diagnostic reporting which means the stairlift can call us to let us know if it has a problem. In practice this means we can call the client to advise them of potential problems, if for example they leave their lift off charge we can call and tell them thereby preventing the batteries draining.

We also showed preproduction samples of our two new bath lifts, the Nirvana Reclining bath lift which will replace the Minivator 303 and the Atlantis fixed back bath lift which will be a new addition to the independent living products range. Both these products were well received and we even took pre-orders for delivery as soon the products become available later in the year.

Overall the response from visitors was very positive indeed. We look forward to the full release of these products and many more exciting innovations from our product design specialists.

Stairlift manufacturer Minivator has announced another year of continued growth with like for like sales increasing by 13% over 2006. Having enjoyed another strong year in both the Trade and Government sectors Minivator has also reported an operating profit up 32%. Performance in international markets was also strong with Sterling Stairlifts, their US subsidiary, again achieving high double digit sales growth.

Reflecting on 2007 Chief Executive Mike Lord Commented “2007 was a busy year for the team at Minivator: it is amazing to think the business is now five times bigger than it was when it was acquired just seven years ago! We have continued to invest in both New Product Design and IT, with last year seeing our third successive year of record capital investment.

Last years investment has built the foundation for an even busier year in 2008. We have got off to a flying start having achieved some early wins gaining established business from key competitors. We expect to continue this run as we role out our eVolution service package and embark on a programme of new product launches which promises a year where we introduce more products and developments than ever before.”

The offset footplate has been specially designed for use in these circumstances and it allows the height of the track to be reduced significantly by changing the position of the footplate. As the track height is reduced the offset Footplate can also offer increased bulkhead clearances.

Further to this, this footplate can also fit into narrower staircases, again allowing a stairlift to be installed where a standard unit would not fit.

Minivator’s Auto Platform is the first fully automated, straight solution to overcome the problems posed by staircases with a single 90° turn and one or two subsequent stairs to the top landing. Whilst a stairlift with a curved track is the ultimate solution for such configurations, they can sometimes be space or cost prohibitive. A platform offers a cheaper alternative by bridging the gap between the final parked position of the stairlift and the landing.
This fully automatic design is a simple solution for users: the stairlift is used as normal with no need to worry about operation of the platform.
Each platform is made to measure. A survey of the staircase is taken using Minivator’s eSurvey system; this provides an accurate 3D plan of the staircase around which the platform is designed. The platform is pre-manufactured to provide an excellent fit whilst removing the need for on site
cutting.

Minister for Science and Innovation and constituency MP, Ian Pearson, visited local Stairlift manufacturer Minivator to view their facilities. Mr Pearson found the visit of interest for a number of reasons “Not only was I impressed by the way Minivator has utilised technological developments to improve processes and product but also at their commitment and investment in training for the future.” Mr Pearson went on to comment “It is always encouraging to see companies funded by Private Equity ploughing investment into training for the future.” Minivator has a well established apprenticeship scheme for their stairlift engineer which is supported at board level.

James Barbour-Smith of investors Gresham Private Equity told us, “Gresham invests in companies with first class management and high growth prospects. We continue to support Minivator’s investment in market leading innovation and its successful apprenticeship programme as it plans for future growth.” During September 2007 Minivator successfully employed seven apprentices within the Field Service department and are committed to increase this further to 15 within the coming year. At the heart of this process is the clear need to produce engineers for the future who are completely immersed in the company culture and ethics. From experience some of their very best engineers have emerged through the ongoing apprentice program thus entirely justifying the investment that is made.
