Building Regulations - Scotland

In Scotland, access requirements are integrated into general Technical Standards. These apply to: new buildings; conversions; extensions to existing buildings (but not to the existing buildings themselves); and parts of a building that are altered or that are adversely affected by an alteration being carried out elsewhere in the building.

Technical Standard S incorporates detailed provisions relating to the installation of a passenger lift. The Standard refers to BS6440 and BS5776 in relation to the provision of a powered lifting platform and wheelchair platform stairlifts respectively.

There is currently no guidance in the Technical Standard relating to the relative suitability of each type of lifting device.
