Wheelchair Lifts: British Standards

A number of British Standards are applicable to platform lifts:

British Standards 6440

This standard provides minimum recommendations for the design, construction, installation, operation, maintenance and safety of fixed lifting platforms with fully or partially enclosed lift platforms.
Some dimensional references in this standard do differ from those given in Approved Document M.
Where differences occur, those given in Approved Document M currently represents the most up-to-date reference source.

British Standard 5776

This standard is primarily concerned with stairlifts installed in domestic premises as you are no doubt aware, but it does also provide additional guidance for equipment installed in public premises in Annexe A.

British Standard 8300

This document explains how the built environment can be designed to anticipate and overcome restrictions that prevent disabled people from making full use of premises and their surroundings.

The guidance in Approved Document M is based on and is complementary to BS8300. In a few cases, this guidance differs from the recommendation in the standard. Compliance with the recommendations in 8300 therefore, while ensuring good practice, is not necessarily equivalent to compliance with the guidance in Approved Document M.
